Science Robotics Meeting in Japan 2018
—To Shape the Future of Robotics

Welcome to our first annual Scientific Conference on Robotics. Our goal is for this conference to become an opportunity for the robotics community to come together to share ideas, develop collaborations, discuss new discoveries and to shape the future of robotics.

We will launch the Science Robotics Meeting in Japan for the same reasons we launched the journal Science Robotics. Whether fully autonomous or in close collaboration with humans, robots are becoming ubiquitous. Found in space and deep-sea exploration, performing in the operating room or driving automobiles, their influence grows daily. Science Robotics Meeting in Japan will complement our journal and become a much-needed forum for the latest technological advances and for the critical social, ethical and policy issues surrounding robotics. Robotics has become truly multidisciplinary, and this conference will cover the traditional disciplines of robotics, as well as emerging trends such as advanced materials and bio-inspired designs. We welcome you to become a part of this community and attend the Science Robotics Meeting in Japan, as we bring together the robotics community to discuss and shape the future of robotics for the benefit of all.

Science Robotics Meeting in Japan 2018
Challenges and Opportunities of Robotics

Science Robotics Meeting in Japan 2018 will be held in Tokyo from March 12 through March 14, 2018. This is the first Science Robotics meeting in the world organized by AAAS (The American Association for the Advancement of Science), who is known as the publisher of Science. Science Robotics is the name of their sister journal for robotics.

Japan has been serving as one of the leading countries of robotics, where world-leading robotics researchers and worldleading robotics industries has been interacting and creating new robotics fields. During the meeting, the world-leading robotics experts from both academia and industries will meet and discuss the challenges and opportunities in emerging fields of robotics.

Robotics is advancing more than we had expected with rapid advancement of emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning, Human-Robot Interaction(HRI), Cyber-Physical Systems(CPS) and so on. For example, recent advancement of deep learning has completely changed the world of speech recognition and visual recognition and has also opened new fields in robotics.

The research on HRI has realized in-depth relation between a human and a robot and is creating new robotics for manufacturing, medical and rehabilitation, and many other fields. The concept of CPS is bringing paradigm shifts in not only industrial but also societal systems. Robotics is playing important roles in these transformative research and development.

In this meeting, we will overview how robotics will cause possible changes in our society together with the emerging technologies, ranging from conventional robotics fields, such as manufacturing, logistics, and agriculture, to emerging applications, such as medicine, health care, drug design, automobile, etc. We hope that this meeting will create an opportunity for all attendees to further advance the robotics for the benefit of all people.
